This is a question we get asked on a regular basis.
We spoke to Sarah Humphreys, Sales Director at Premier Alarms for her guidance:
In its simplest form, an alarm system will comprise of various detection devices that will activate a loud audible warning in the event of a trigger of the detection device. This is known most commonly as a “bells only” alarm system. The detection device may be sited in the grounds of the property, on the perimeter of your home or building, such as a window or a door, within certain rooms, or on specific items of high value.
Active infrared beams will have the ability to protect larger spaces and can create a “boxing ring” effect of protection in the grounds of your property, creating an alert of a trespasser before they reach your door. Vibration sensors are generally placed on windows and doors and are activated by the opening, jemmying, or smashing through of the opening. Passive infrared and dual-tech detectors are there to protect entire rooms through one sensor; activating the alarm system when movement is detected. Asset tags can be added onto any fine art, ornaments, statues, and cars to protect that individual item. Any alarm system should be designed to blend seamlessly with the aesthetic of your home, with wireless technology where necessary for minimal disruption. The alarm system should also blend with your lifestyle, ensuring the property is protected even with pets and children at play.
Rather than only relying on the bells of the alarm system to initiate a response to the burglary occurring, it is commonplace to have app control and notifications initiated, as well as a centrally monitored connection. The bells of a system have a strong deterrent factor; 84% of burglars state they would avoid a property with an alarm system (Office for National Statistics). This is relatively low cost these days and can make sure the right people are notified at the point of an activation for a response to occur as efficiently and effectively as possible. The responder could be as simple as you the homeowner, a neighbour, or a professional responder such as a keyholding company, private security, or the police.
From experience I know that those with high value assets have risks that extend beyond just burglary, and protection companies, such as ourselves will look to mitigate as many risks through the intruder alarm as possible, both for better protection, and for best return on investment in the intruder alarm system. We advise that you also consider smoke and heat detectors being integrated onto an intruder alarm to protect from fire; panic buttons which can be added to protect in situations of duress; leak detection and automatic water shut off integrations to minimise risk of water damage; electrical shut off for ease of isolation of higher risk circuits; and with Premier we can even monitor the movement and behaviours of more vulnerable family members through the system.
