Winter Driving: Think Smart, Stay Safe

With the UK facing storms and snow, weather warnings are becoming more frequent. Driving during these conditions can be risky.

Did you know that in a 2023 survey of AA members, 33% said they would ignore a Red weather warning for snow, and 62% said they would continue with their plans after an Amber warning?* These numbers show that many of us are still underestimating the dangers of winter driving.

If you’re planning to travel in cold, snowy or wet weather, taking a few simple steps can make a significant difference to your safety:

Plan ahead

  • Check updates: Look at weather forecasts and traffic reports before setting off. Stick to main roads, as these are more likely to be gritted, and build extra time into your journey.
  • Ask yourself if the trip is essential: Postponing or delaying your journey is sometimes the safest option. If you must travel, allow extra time for your journey so you can drive according to the conditions.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Clean your windscreens, mirrors, and lights. Ensure your windscreen wipers and washers are working and your washer fluid is topped up.
  • Pack essentials: Warm clothing, food, water, a torch, a phone charger, and an ice scraper can make a real difference if you get stuck.
  • Check your tyres and mobile phone: Proper tyre pressure improves grip, and a fully charged phone ensures you can call for help if needed.

Drive smoothly and carefully

  • Slow down early: Braking distances increase in icy, wet or snowy conditions, so reduce your speed sooner than usual.
  • Avoid sudden movements: Smooth acceleration, gentle braking, and careful steering reduce the risk of skidding.
  • Driving in snow and ice: Pull away in second gear, avoid harsh braking, and steer gently into a skid if your vehicle starts to slide.
  • Leave more space: Keeping extra distance from the car ahead can prevent rear-end collisions.

Get the correct motor insurance for your needs

Winter driving brings extra risk with UK drivers around 15% more likely to be involved in a collision during the colder months compared with summer**, making the right insurance essential. Remember, every vehicle on public roads must be insured to protect you, your passengers, and others. If you drive for work, make sure your insurance provider knows, and that you have the correct cover. Your employer may also need verification.

It’s not just about getting to your destination, it’s about getting there safely.
