Wrong fuel?

Putting the wrong fuel in your car is more common than you might think and it can cause costly damage.

But did you know, this type of mistake is seldom covered within your motor insurance policy?

Each year, thousands of drivers in the UK accidentally fill up with the wrong fuel, with the RAC estimating this figure could be in region of 150,000 incidents.

Petrol in a diesel engine can cause more harm than the reverse, potentially damaging fuel injectors, pumps, and other components.

Here are a few tips to consider when you next visit the fuel station:

Tips to help avoid misfuelling

  • Don’t rely on the colour of the hose or nozzle.  Check the label on the pump trigger and the fuel grade indicator on the pump.
  • Consider adding a sticker near your fuel cap to remind you of the correct fuel type.
  • Keep your concentration at the fuel pump. Try not to fuel when you’re in a hurry or stressed as this is when mistakes can happen.
  • Diesel drivers should be especially cautious, as the petrol nozzle can fit a diesel car. Anti-misfuelling devices are available to prevent accidental refuelling.

What to do if you have misfuelled

  • If you’re still at the pump and haven’t started the engine, don’t switch on the ignition. This helps prevent fuel from circulating.
  • If you’ve already driven away, pull over and stop the vehicle as soon as it’s safe to prevent any further damage.
  • If you have breakdown assistance, they can assist to flush and clean the system.
