When most people picture flooding, they imagine rivers overflowing or storm surges battering coastal towns. However, flooding in the UK is not confined to these traditional risks. According to an Environment Agency’ report, flooding can happen anywhere, even far from rivers or the coast.
Flooding: a growing threat nationwide
Today, surface water flooding caused by intense rainfall is one of the fastest-growing environmental threats, particularly in densely built-up urban areas where drainage systems can become overwhelmed. The Environment Agency reports that over 5.2 million homes in England are currently at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea, or surface water.
Groundwater flooding is another hidden danger, affecting between 122,000 and 290,000 properties, many of which lie outside recognised flood zones. Groundwater flooding is when the level of water within the rock or soil underground, known as the water table, rises to reach ground level and then ultimately starts to seep through to the surface and cause damage. These figures highlight that even properties considered “low risk” may face flooding due to changing weather patterns, increased urbanisation, and climate change.
The true cost of flooding
Recovering from a flood can be financially and emotionally draining. On average, repairing a flooded home costs between £30,000 and £50,000, and works can take six to twelve months to complete. During that time, families may face the additional disruption of temporary accommodation, lost belongings, and extended insurance claims.
Why flood insurance matters
In many UK home insurance policies, flood cover is included as part of your buildings and contents insurance, but this isn’t always guaranteed, especially for properties in high-risk flood areas. Whilst home insurance covers a broad range of risks, flood insurance specifically protects you from flood-related damage, which can be catastrophic and costly.
Comprehensive flood insurance is essential for safeguarding your property and peace of mind. The right cover can include:
- Structural repairs for flood damage
- Protection for household contents
- Costs for alternative accommodation during recovery
- Faster claims handling and reduced financial stress.
